Doesn't matter if it's really cheap, really lazy, or both. I was thinking of what I wanted for dinner tonight, but I don’t really want to cook. Despite my love of good cooking and high quality food, I’m not a snob - I’m not above cramming my face with a Big Mac or fried chicken from Popeye’s (the fried chicken situation here is dire).
Even if it’s for dinner, I’m not above heating up a can of beans, making a simple salad, and eating it all with some nice bread. It fills you up, isn’t going fill me with fat and shame like a Big Mac (I think the large fries I always want are worse than the Big Mac itself) or fried chicken, and (I think) it’s pretty damn tasty for something quick and simple.
My other go to (also paired with bread) is using smoked salmon, cream cheese (even better if you can find the fancy kind with roasted garlic or chives or some other fancy stuff) and a simple salad. It’s only recently I started using the salmon/cream cheese combo, and I don’t know why it works, but I love it.
Even if you’re eating well tonight, feel free to discuss. I’m actually looking forward to those beans when I get home.

My ultimate slovenly bachelor thing was to open a can of chicken, dump it in the rice cooker, add rice and water, cook, serve with butter and/or soy sauce. Total prep time like 20 minutes, but hands-involved prep time of about 40 seconds.

Minimum and I mean minimum once a week ! Often times twice or more.
I even buy the no name stuff at $0.50 a box. Including the cost of the milk and butter this is still well under a dollar and takes roughly 10 mins.

Brown ground beef, add ground chill pepper and seasoning salt, dump in tupperware, add2-4 cups Colby jack, stir, microwave until melted, eat with fork.
Ate at least 3 Times a week in college. Still eat it now when my wife is out of town.

Guilty pleasure for me is Chick Fil A or Five Guys if I don’t cook. I’m not really sure I’ve got a guilty pleasure when cooking, I tend to cook fairly healthy. I guess my lazy/cheap meal is frozen turkey burgers, spiced in some odd ball way.

Damn, that’s cheap!
I was never into mac and cheese, even as a kid. Weird thing is, it always looks appetizing to me, to the point where I kind of want it after seeing your picture, but I never really like the taste of it.
Being Asian, I go with the closest relative, which is instant noodle in all its forms (ramen, udon, jjajangmyun).

Is it possible to get too old to enjoy tater tots? I’ve loved these damn things for as long as I can remember, and I still have memories of my mom taking some out of the oven as my brother and I would arrive home after school. Dunk em in a ketchup/BBQ sauce mix or sometimes ketchup/tabasco, and you’re living the dream.

What I would call pancakes and most Canadians would call crêpes are a quick, simple go-to for me when I’m feeling lazy. Mix it up with some apple pieces, banana slices or raisins in the batter for variety’s sake, cook up some thickly sliced side pork in the oven for on the side and consider me a happy camper.

That sounds really tasty, too. Do you put a sauce on the pancake? Usually when I have pancakes, it’s for breakfast and with a generous amount of maple syrup.
However, the last time I made pancakes it was Korean-style using chives; it came out decent but not quite like the way my mom makes them. It’s really simple, just batter and chives (really, it should be the Chinese variety for it to taste right but I used the regular stuff you can find in most Canadian grocers) and you dip in a sauce of soy, sesame oil, rice vinegar, sesame seeds, and dried red pepper (like an Asian paprika of sorts). Fucking delicious when it’s done right. Adequate when I made it.

A quick pasta. If you haven’t already, try ground pork. I used to use ground beef for all my pasta sauces but after switching to pork I don’t think I could go back. I haven’t tried a pork/beef mix yet but I think that would be awesome, too.

Apple sauce, maple syrup, some jams, honey, they all work. Someone I knew from France served them with Nutella, which was delicious but a bit overpowering/excessive for my taste.
I’m Dutch and pancakes have traditionally been a dinner type meal for me, though I’ll gladly tackle any leftovers for breakfast the next day.

Breakfast - the dinner of champions.
I used to do a full on breakfast with toast, eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, and maybe some avocado (obviously, living in California). But now mostly we do breakfast burritos. Scramble some eggs with onions, garlic, mushrooms, sausage, maybe some spinach, roll up in to tortilla with some melted pepperjack cheese and hot sauce, brown the sides a bit for some texture - easy and delicious meal with very little clean up.

Nutella is a weird one - in principle, I should love it because it’s essentially pureed Ferrero Rocher. I love the chocolate and hazelnut combination. However, I’ve never really liked the spread... anything I put it on seems to make it worse, whereas I’ll enjoy take a small amount and just licking it right off the spoon or knife.

If I spread it one something it’s bread, something dense enough not to be overwhelmed by the Nutella. I’m definitely not above doing the teaspoon straight from the jar though, that stuff is chocolate cocaine.

My reply to JawKnee sums it up - breakfast food is just great stuff for any time of day.
I’ve stumbled home after a night out at the bar and just made myself a quick breakfast-type meal just because it’s so quick and simple to make. Plus it’s filling and hugely satisfying - you got your meat, eggs, veg, and bread. I don’t normally have tortillas on hand so I’ll use pita bread, but the principle remains the same.
It’s good to see that there are others with the “breakfast, anytime” mentality. Who the hell decided it should only be for breakfast, anyway?

While I do eat the boxed stuff every now and then, what’s funny to me is that it doesn’t take any longer to cook macaroni and cheese starting with noodles, milk, and a block of your favorite cheese over the stove.
Pepperjack is pretty spectacular for this.

Oh and for at home it’s usually tuna, mayonnaise, Sriracha, pepper and some bread.

It’s not the time or the effort that is the problem. Cheese is fucking expensive(at least it is here in Canada).
Imitation cheese powder is all we can afford with the current value of our loony.
I can make this as a whole for about $0.75 cents. A tiny block of semi decent cheese will easily cost $5-7 bucks + the noodles + the milk.

Distance is also what keeps me from Five Guys, so tasty on occasion though. My old go to for fast food was Wendy’s but I’ve been eating better and have Chick Fil A as my last resort if I can’t cook. Plus that darn Chick Fil A sauce is half cocaine.
I’ve been adapting Alton Brown’s 4 Lists method to help make better choices, eat healthier, and hopefully cut some weight. Easy to do and easy to customize.

There’s something super good about tots. A local food truck has them as a specialty and I absolutely loved them, especially after a few pints at my favorite brewery. I told the cook/chef/owner to make them however she would eat them: crispy fried tots topped with pulled pork, spicy ranch, tomatoes, scallions, cheddar, and buffalo powder. Absolute heaven and one of the best meals I've ever had.

My ancestors great depression meal of choice:
Hard boiled eggs sliced into quarters, put on white bread toast, covered in a thin layer of tomato soup. 2-3 slices make a meal.
Doesn’t get much easier or cheaper, though the price of eggs is through the roof lately.

Eggs are generally around $4-$5 dollars a dozen, although I’ve seen some brands that are around $7. This is just regular stuff you find at large grocers, not that farm-fresh organic free-range whatever you get at farmers markets (I can’t imagine what those cost).
While I love a fried egg with a runny yolk, scrambled eggs/omelettes or even poached eggs, I really don’t like hard-boiled eggs. It’s that strange smell that they give off that turns me off of it (although I hear this can come from overcooking).
I do something similar if I’m making a quick snack - toast the bread until it’s really dry and crunchy, sauté some mushrooms and put a fried egg (runny yolk, naturally) on top. The bread is no longer dry but is still crunchy because of the egg yolk and mushrooms, and it's probably one of my favourite snacks to have. Reasonably cheap (mushrooms are generally cheap around here) and is normally enough to get rid of any hunger without feeling overly full.

Whoa are you in Europe? You’re making me feel bad for complaining about 2.50$/dozen eggs!
How are you cooking your eggs that smell funny?
an easy way is the 10/10/10 method, bring water to boil, lower heat to get a slow boil, add eggs, cook for 10 minutes, remove from heat and let stand for 10 minutes, run cool water over eggs/add ice let sit for 10 minutes.
or if you can be bothered to pay more attention you can bring the the pot to a boil with the eggs in it, turn it to a low boil for 2-3 minutes. then complete the second two 10's.
The sauted (?) mushrooms would be great if they didnt’ take so darn long, the same goes for Hungarian/banana peppers.

Nope, in Ottawa, Canada. There is a little bit of variance but most eggs tend to be in that $4-$5 range. I don't think I've ever seen $2.50/dozen eggs. If you look at the right time, $3/dozen is possible but I don't see that often - perhaps it's because of where I shop.
Hard boiled eggs I’ve only ever done once, I’ve only ever had it once where I found the taste/smell to be tolerable (it was part of breakfast in Istanbul) but I find that more often than not, it has that sulfuric kind of smell, which is apparently a sign of overcooking.
In any case, it’s one of those things I’ve never enjoyed. I don’t plan on starting to enjoy them, either just because I don’t like having to peel off all that shell (and apparently there are ways of making this easier, too).
